Duel 1

Tony Stewart wins first Gatorade Duel
The Gatorade Duel Qualifying race for the Daytona500 had some fireworks. Tony Stewart was victorious in the race followed byDale Earnhardt Jr., Marcos Ambrose, Jeff Burton, and Carl Edwards. MichaelMcDowell and Robby Gordon earn starting spots in the Daytona 500.

The first incidentof the day occurred in between turn 1 and 2 when David Gilliland came up acrossthe track after being tapped in the rear left corner by Michael McDowell. WhenGilliland came up across the track he collected Paul Menard and Juan PabloMontoya. Brad Keselowski also had minor damage. Gilliland, Montoya, Menard willhave to start from rear of the Daytona 500 due to having to go to back up cars.

After a long stretch of a green flag run, we started to see green flag pitstops. When Denny Hamlin and Marcos Ambrose pitted for stops together so theycould have each other to draft with once they got back out onto the track.
Forthe first time in a few years, the pack overtook the two car tandem and Ambroseand Hamlin both went a lap down.

After Michael Waltrip took a pit stop he cameback onto the track and with no help at the beginning of the backstretch gotloose and turned up head first into the wall and ruined his chances of racingin this year’s Daytona 500.

On the final restart with 4 laps to go. TonyStewart and Kevin Harvick were out front. On the final lap on the backstretch,Jamie McMurray got into Aric Almirola which sent Almirola’s car into DanicaPatrick’s car spinning head on into the inside wall on the backstretch causingsome of the barrier to give and her car was totaled. Danica was fine after thewreck. In an interview with SPEED Danica described the wreck; she said it “Happenedreally quick.” At the end of the interview she says (laughing) “maybe theback-up car will be faster.”

When the caution came out, the race went to yellowand Tony Stewart won. After the race Stewart commented on Michael Waltrip missing the 500, Tony said “MichaelWaltrip eats, sleeps and breathes Daytona and Talladega. It’ll be a shame if hemisses (the 500).”

Trevor Bayne, who isalready locked into 500, failed to finish in top 2 Go-or-Go homers spots whichmeans in Duel 2 Kenny Wallace will have to race his way into the Daytona 500. Aftera crazy first duel we’ll see what the second one brings.

Duel 2
Matt Kenseth wins Duel 2 at Daytona
Avery cautious and quiet duel 2 ended up with Matt Kenseth winning the race.Dave Blaney and Joe Nemechek raced their way into the Daytona 500. Most of therace had little action, teams were very cautious not to wreck their Daytona 500cars.

Kenny Wallace’s car lost the draft halfway through the race and neverre-grouped and he will miss the Daytona 500.

The most action occurred at thelast 2 laps. Going to the white flag Matt Kenseth and Jimmie Johnson got a rundrafting each other and when Greg Biffle tried to move up in front of them heslid up the track and Kenseth and Johnson moved lower down the track andcontinued on. At the end of the backstretch on the final lap, Regan Smith andJimmie Johnson made contact which allowed Matt Kenseth to pull ahead and winthe race.

Finishing 2nd was Regan Smith and 3rd wasJimmie Johnson. The 2nd race had much more of a qualifying race feel toit. Expect the Daytona 500 to be more like the first Gatorade Duel.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Escaping an attempted block from Roush Fenway Racing teammate Greg Biffle, Matt Kenseth took the lead on the final lap of the second of two Gatorade Duel 150-mile qualifying races Thursday at Daytona International Speedway and held off Regan Smith for the win.

Tony Stewart won the first Duel under caution, a half-lap after Danica Patrick took a vicious hit against the inside wall on the backstretch.

In a caution-free race, Kenseth, the 2009 Daytona 500 winner, claimed the first Duel victory ever for Roush Fenway. Smith came home second, followed by Jimmie Johnson, Elliott Sadler and pole-sitter Greg Biffle.

Stewart's 15th victory at Daytona in NASCAR's top two series combined, including three in Duels, three in the Budweiser Shootout, three in the July Sprint Cup race and and six in the Nationwide Series. Counting two wins in IROC competition, Stewart has 17 stock-car wins at Daytona, second on the all-time list.

Stewart, the reigning Cup champion, will attempt to win the Daytona 500 for the first time on Sunday. Thursday's victory was his first with crew chief Steve Addington, who joined Stewart-Haas Racing during the offseason.

The caution flew after Stewart had led the field to the white flag, with race runner-up Dale Earnhardt Jr. in hot pursuit. Contact from Aric Almirola's Ford launched Patrick's Chevrolet toward the inside SAFER barrier on the backstretch, and impact with the wall was hard enough to lift all four wheels of Patrick's car off the pavement.

Dave Blaney and Joe Nemechek transferred into the Daytona 500 with 12th and 17th-place finishes in the second Duel. Michael McDowell and Robby Gordon finished sixth and ninth, respectively, in the first qualifying race to earn spots in Sunday's 54th running of The Great American Race.

Marcos Ambrose ran third in the first Duel after regaining a lost lap under a late caution, followed by Jeff Burton in fourth with pole-sitter Carl Edwards coming home fifth.

Stewart had led 10 straight laps when Michael Waltrip, returning to the track after pitting for a splash of fuel, shot up the banking and into the Turn 2 wall on Lap 53, simultaneously destroying his No. 40 Toyota and his prospects of racing in his 26th straight Daytona 500.

Stewart will start third in the 500, with Earnhardt set to roll off fifth. Patrick will start from the rear of the field in a backup car. Kenseth earned the fourth starting position on the Daytona 500 grid, with Smith set to take the green flag from the sixth position.

Matt Kenseth Crosses The Line First In Duel #2

Posted by imelda sovzky

Matt Kenseth won duel #2 after beating teammate Greg Biffle. Biffle was in the lead when the white flag flew but Kenseth had a run so Biffle tried to block which sent Biffle falling back. The race was somewhat boring in my opinion. But the good thing is that no cars were seriously wrecked. There was a bit of fender bumpin' between Johnson and Smith on the final lap but other than that it was pretty good. Final Laps (Video): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YyED2MdY1XU

It wasn't good for Kenny Wallace and J.J. Yeley. Yeley had engine problems early on in the race, and around lap 30 Kenny Wallace reported the fuel pressure was low. He spent 3 laps on pit road and wasn't able to recover. Both Kenny and J.J. were looking to race their way into the 500.

Most of the cars all pit on lap 40 to get a quick splash of fuel to continue the race. Many drivers were starting to complain about their engine's but luckily NASCAR allows them to put a new engine in the car after the Duels.

Joe Nemechek and Dave Blaney were the two drivers who raced their way into the 500. Blaney was stripped of his points when his owner sold them to Stewart Haas Racing for Danica Patrick to use to lock her into the Daytona 500.

Nice to know that Sega is getting really port-happy these days.  But is this a straight port with a few graphical enhancements (see Crazy Taxi) or will they go the distance with this one?  Most likely the former

Hey, at least you spoiled little brats on XBL have NO excuse not to know what Jet Set Radio is.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Tony Stewart won the first of two Gatorade Duel 150-mile qualifying races under caution Thursday at Daytona International Speedway, a half-lap after Danica Patrick took a vicious hit against the inside wall on the backstretch.

The caution flew after Stewart had led the field to the white flag, with race runner-up Dale Earnhardt Jr. in hot pursuit. Tony Stewart Wins Duel #1

Posted by imelda sovzky

Tony Stewart came across the finish line first at the end of Duel #1. But his teammate Danica Patrick didnt cross the finish line on the final lap. She got hit by Aric Almirola and she hit the inside wall hard. She was alright, released from the infield care center. Danica will have to go to a backup car, she said "maybe the backup is faster". It could easily be true, we have seen many drivers who go to back up cars come back and finish in the top five of a race. video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wtzioHXq8I

Montoya, Menard and Gilliland who were all locked in already crashed on lap #9. They will all be going to backup cars. Gilliland got loose on the bottom of the track and came back up hit Montoya, and Montoya then hit Menard. All three drivers are fine, they were released from the infield care center. Gilliland and his Front Row Motorsports team has 2 back up cars for 3 drivers. Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_ao1Dk3Pmo

Michael Waltrip will not race in the 500 after he got loose coming back up onto the track from pit road, he got loose while coming back up on the track and hit the outside wall. Michael was also fine physically, but he was very upset saying on his radio that he was sorry. Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEVhfbaiGUs

Marcos Ambrose finsihed third in Duel #1 and also finished third in the shootout, I would say he is the darkhorse of the Daytona 500. Michael McDowell and Robby Gordon were the two lucky drivers who raced themselves into the 500 by being the top two drivers in duel #1.

Notebook: Brad Keselowski survives scare in Daytona 500 practice

Feb. 22, 2012

By Reid Spencer
NASCAR Wire Service

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Brad Keselowski survived a close call on Wednesday, one that almost made mincemeat of his Budweiser Shootout strategy.

Early in Wednesday's first practice session for Daytona 500 cars, Keselowski's No. 2 Dodge spun off the backstretch after contact from Clint Bowyer's No. 15 Toyota, as Keselowski was trying to make room for Ryan Newman's Chevrolet in front of him. After a high-speed slide through the infield grass, Keselowski brought his car to the garage.

Fortunately for the Penske Racing team, the damage was minimal. After the crew cleaned the grass and dirt from the undercarriage, Keselowski was back on the track, thankful that his efforts to save his carduring Saturday's Shootout had not gone for naught.

Both Keselowski and teammate AJ Allmendinger ran conservatively in the back of the pack on Saturday, after both lost their primary Shootout cars in a crash during practice on Friday.

"For us, we destroyed a good racecar in practice," Keselowski told the NASCAR Wire Service after the Shootout. "Obviously, that put us behind in our car rotation. It was very, very important that webrought a car home from the Shootout, between AJ and I. It's our backup car for the 500.

"So, basically, without having that car available, if something was to happen in the next few days, we'd be out of bullets. That's not good. So we had to make sure we had cars left at the end of (Saturday's) race. We were in kind of a unique position."

Keselowski came home unscathed and finished fourth in the Shootout. Allmendinger wasn't as fortunate, falling victim to a late wreck also involving Jeff Gordon, Kurt Busch, Jamie McMurray and Carl Edwards.

Keselowski and Allmendinger both hope to survive Thursday's Gatorade Duels 150-mile qualifying races with their primary cars intact, but in a worst-case scenario, Penske Racing has two cars ready to transport from North Carolina to Daytona.

EARNHARDT: 'I JUST WANT TO WIN'

Yes, Dale Earnhardt Jr. would love to win the Daytona 500, break a 129-race drought and give team owner Rick Hendrick his 200th Sprint Cup victory.

More than winning the 500 specifically, however, Earnhardt simply wants to win a race -- any race.

"I just want to win -- anywhere," said Earnhardt, whose last victory came at Michigan in June 2008, during the Bush administration. "I just want to go ahead and get that done, so I can think about the next one and get the streak over with and get back to victory lane.

"We lost a million dollars by not being in the Winner's Circle program last year for the company (Hendrick Motorsports). They could use that money. There are just so many benefits to getting in the Winner's Circle. It'll help our team. It'll validate what me and (crew chief) Steve (Letarte) have been trying to do the last couple years.

"It is the Daytona 500. It's the biggest race of the season. It would be pretty spectacular for me personally to win it, but it would do so many other things that I can't even list right now, for the team and the company going forward. It would be awesome."

KAHNE TO BACKUP CAR

Kasey Kahne's slide through the tri-oval grass in Wednesday's second session wasn't as benign as Keselowski's adventure on the backstretch in the first.

Kahne ripped the left-front fender off his No. 5 Chevrolet, forcing the team to go to the backup car. Consequently, Kahne will start from the rear of the field in Thursday's second Duel.

Only 25 teams participated in the second practice. Unwilling to risk damage to their cars before the Duels, 24 drivers stayed off the track during the 90-minute session.

KNAUS FACING NASCAR SANCTIONS

Life without Chad Knaus? Jimmie Johnson would prefer not to think about that prospect.

NASCAR president Mike Helton has made it abundantly clear that the No. 48 team will incur penalties for the outside-the-box modifications to the "C" posts of Johnson's Chevrolet. How severe those penalties will be remains to be seen, but a suspension to Johnson's crew chief is among the possible sanctions.

NASCAR confiscated the offending "C" posts, which connect the rear of the roof to the rear quarter panels, during Friday's opening-day inspection and required the team to replace them.

Though Johnson won two races, including the Daytona 500, during a four-race suspension Knaus served in 2006, he'd prefer to have hiscrew chief on the box.

"It's not good for any team that goes through it," Johnson said of the impending penalties. "It certainly puts a tough wrinkle on things, but at this point, I would be purely speculating.

"I'm hopeful and want to be optimistic that (suspension) wouldn't be the case, but I don't have any more news. So, we're going to have to wait until Tuesday (when penalty announcements are expected) to see where things shake out."

DIVERSITY AWARDS CELEBRATE 5th YEAR

At its fifth annual Diversity Affairs Awards Luncheon on Wednesday at the Daytona 500 Club, NASCAR recognized six participants and partners who have played significant roles in helping to promote a diverse environment throughout NASCAR racing.

Those recognized were: Walter Thomas III (Young Racer); Darrell Wallace Jr. (Drive for Diversity Participant); Perron Jones (Diversity Internship Program); Steve deSouza, Joe Gibbs Racing (Industry Ambassador);International Speedway Corporation (NASCAR Partner); and Hampton University(Educational Institution).

And just which drivers were eligible for theGatorade Duel 1 live? For nearly 30 years, the criteria were pretty simple: the previous season’s pole winners and past shootout victors. When it comes to NASCAR, it all starts with Daytona, literally and figuratively. It is here where many of the sport's most enduring memories have been created. Drivers who have won both the season-opening Daytona 500 and an overall series championship have actually said that winning the Daytona 500 was more important.

The 500 is the one that sets the tone for the entire season to follow. Who can forget Darrell Waltrip's "Ickey Shuffle" in Victory Lane after his victory in 1989, or Dale Earnhardt's row of congratulatory handshakes on his way to that elusive place that had eluded him for so long? Or what about the 1979 race in which Cale Yarborough and the Allison brothers duked it out on national television?

2012 Gatorade Duel at Daytona Race 1 & 2 Results
Tony Stewart took the checkered and yellow flags to win the first NSCS Gatorade Duel at Daytona race Thursday afternoon at Daytona International Speedway. There was an incident that happened on the backstretch after the white flag was flown to bring out the caution, when Danica Patrick took a hard hit into the infield wall after being caught up with Aric Almirola. Thanks to the SAFER barries, Patrick came away unscathed.

Following Stewart to the drop of the checkered and yellow flags were Dale Earnhardt Jr. finishing second, Marcos Ambrose third, Jeff Burton fourth and Carl Edwards finishing fifth.

Rounding out the top-ten finishers were Michael McDowell finishing sixth, Kevin Harvick seventh, AJ Allmendinger eighth, Robby Gordon ninth and Jamie McMurray finishing in the tenth position.

Rick Hendrick says he will appeal if Knaus gets penalty from NASCAR
Hendrick spoke with USA Today about the sponsorship, the inspection failure of Jimmie Johnson's No. 48 Chevy last week and the return of pack racing (and big wrecks) at Daytona:

Q: Are you planning to appeal if NASCAR penalizes the No. 48?
A: Yes. I think NASCAR does a good job in the garage area, and sometimes you agree and sometime you don't. I'm gathering all the facts on our end about when the car raced and who worked on it. We have really good documentation in our shop for every hour spent on a car and who does what with the mill and paint work. I've talked to the guys who do that work in the shop. I feel good about our position, but I have to sit down and go through it and present our case and go from there.

Q: You believe the car was legal?
A: Yes. I ran every restrictor-plate race we raced last year and went to the R&D Center. So, it's only been painted since then. It's been seen an awful lot (by NASCAR). So I need to get down to why it was wrong this time and (why) it's OK the other times.

Q: Did crew chief Chad Knaus tell you there's nothing different about the car?
A: The guys who do the body work have told me that. Chad doesn't do that work. I talked to Chad, but I talked to the other guys too. They've stated they absolutely didn't touch that area since it was built before the 2011 Daytona 500.

Q: Is Knaus' history as a repeat offender counting against him?
A: Well history is history, and you can't change it. I feel like Chad has been a good citizen the last few years, and he's tried really hard. He goes to the R&D Center. Before he takes air boxes to the track, he shows it to (NASCAR) because he doesn't want to have a problem. I know he works really hard, and I've been told in several situations that he's done a good job in that area. And we have not had any problems. We've had our share in the past, but I think it's a little different. There were a lot of other cars being sanded and (worked) on. Why didn't (the No. 48) get an opportunity to get some of that done if they didn't like it?

Sunoco Rookie Classes announced
Earlier than they have been in recent memory, the classes of Sunoco Rookie of the Year contenders for NASCAR's three national series have been set, for the time being.

In the Sprint Cup series, two drivers have registered for the program, though neither is entered for the Daytona 500. Timmy Hill will attempt to win his second consecutive rookie of the year award for Rick Ware Racing after grabbing the Nationwide series honor in 2011. At this point his competition is Josh Wise, who recently has dabbled in all three national series - with 91 starts since 2007. Owner Larry Gunselman, who is fielding a car for superspeedway ace Mike Wallace at Daytona, had said over the winter he wanted to run Wise for rookie of the year, depending on sponsorship.

The Nationwide series has five contenders, including Jason Bowles who's driving for MacDonald Motorsports. The other four contenders are Joey Gase, 2011 Camping World Truck series champion Austin Dillon, Cole Whitt and Johanna Long, who plans a partial schedule of about 20 races for ML Motorsports.

As has been the case for the past few years, the Truck series rookie class is the largest, with 11 contenders, nine of whom are entered at Daytona. The list includes Dakota Armstrong, Ross Chastain, Dusty Davis, 2011 ARCA Racing series champion Ty Dillon (Austin's brother), Cale Gale, Max Gresham, Paulie Harraka, Caleb Holman, John King, Bryan Silas and John Wes Townley, who is currently under suspension by RAB Racing after a DUI arrest earlier this month in Georgia. Holman is the other driver not entered at Daytona.

As teams make final preparations to start the 2012 race season, the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) announced the lineup of 2012 NASCAR Contingency Program sponsors for all three national series.

The NASCAR Contingency Program is administered by the Charlotte, NC-based NASCAR Automotive Group. Rusty Wallace Racing facebook posting regarding Steve Wallace
"I want to thank everyone for their questions about my plans for 2012. I'll tell you what, it's definitely hard watching everyone get ready for Daytona - this time last year we had just qualified for my first Daytona 500 and were getting ready to run both the Nationwide and Cup races down there.

I'm definitely planning on being in a race car this year, but want to make sure that it's the right opportunity with a team that's competitive and can win races. I'm very grateful to have had a lot of teams call - everyone from some of the top Cup-affiliated teams, to Truck series teams. There are some really great opportunities out there for me if we can put together sponsorship.

In the meantime, my friend Blake Bainbridge and I are building a couple of really nice Super Late Model cars that we're planning on running for fun this year. You'll see us at a lot of the big races for those cars, like the Snowball Derby and the Winchester 400.

I'll be in Daytona later this week and am just going to keep working hard to put together the right opportunity for me to race in 2012."

Mark Martin's Early Daytona Memories
Mark Martin begins his 30th season in NASCAR Sprint Cup racing on Sunday in the 54th running of the Daytona 500. Like many of the 180,000 fans who will attend NASCAR's premier event or the 13 million television viewers watching at home, Martin grew up a fan of "The Great American Race."

One of his first Daytona 500 experiences came in 1976 when the 17-year-old's family drove a motorhome from their Batesville, AR home to Daytona. They spent the night on the speedway's grounds before watching the famous last-lap duel between Richard Petty and David Pearson when the pair crashed in the tri-oval grass just short of the checkered flag. Petty's car wouldn't restart, but Pearson dumped the clutch and kept the car from stalling. Pearson straightened out his damaged machine and slowly crossed the start/finish line to capture the Daytona 500.

A young Mark Martin watched it all from the grandstands.

Smith Tours CSX Locomotive
It wasn't the "little engine that could" that NASCAR driver Regan Smith toured. Instead, it was a big, powerful machine with a weight of approximately 125 times more than his 3,400-pound No. 78 Chevrolet stock car.

Smith, who is currently residing at Daytona International Speedway in preparation for Sunday's Daytona 500 Sprint Cup season opener, took a side trip last week (Friday) to Jacksonville, FL to pay a visit to the CSX Transportation headquarters. The visit also included a trip to a railroad yard where Smith got up-close-and-personal to a 434,000-pound CSX locomotive.

Driving the Dollar General Tundra is "Chance of a Lifetime"
When asked about the opportunity to drive the No. 18 Dollar General Tundra for Kyle Busch Motorsports (KBM) in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) this season, Jason Leffler described it as the "Chance of a Lifetime."

That's high praise from a man who has raced in the Indianapolis 500, piloted Sprint Cup series cars for Chip Ganassi and Joe Gibbs, and has been a fixture in the top-ten of the final NASCAR Nationwide series (NNS) standings the last five years.

So why is driving the Dollar General Tundra the chance of a lifetime? Every driver strives to land a competitive ride which allows him the opportunity to run up front and win races. In its first two seasons competing in the Truck series, KBM's No. 18 Tundra has visited Victory Lane 16 times, led 1,895 laps and recorded 31 top-five finishes in 50 starts.

Jeremy Mayfield indicted on possession of stolen goods charges
Suspended NASCAR driver Jeremy Mayfield was indicted by a Catawba County (N.C.) grand jury Monday on charges of possession of stolen goods stemming from a Nov. 1 search of his property.

The charges - three counts of possession of stolen goods from Fitz Motorsports, Red Bull Racing and office equipment from DEA Ventures, according to indictments posted online by Charlotte television station WSOC - were not a major surprise as law enforcement officials last November seized more than $100,000 worth of goods that had been reported stolen. Also found was 1.5 grams of methamphetamine, and Mayfield was indicted on charges of felony possession of the drug in November. The drug case is pending with March 5 as the next scheduled court date.

Creative Recycling Systems, Inc. joins NASCAR as Official Green Partner
NASCAR announced today that Florida-based Creative Recycling Systems, Inc. (CRS), a leader in the processing of end-of-life electronics, has joined the stable of Official NASCAR Green Partners.

CRS supplies small, mid-size and Fortune 100 companies, government agencies, non-profit organizations, educational institutions and concerned citizens with the best solutions for electronics reuse and recycling. By providing electronic asset disposition management, data security services and by utilizing state-of-the art processing and separation technology, CRS prevents millions of pounds of electronics from entering the world's landfills each year.

The Information Age has created a virtual tidal wave of electronics worldwide. Each year in the United States just less than three million tons are made ready for end of life management, with residential households responsible for more than five times more computer products (by weight) than commercial establishments, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. However, 75% of those items end up going into landfill.

NASCAR fans are more likely than non-fans to recycle and describe their households as green. They are also more likely to own electronics and be involved in purchasing decisions at work. Nearly two-thirds of NASCAR fans describe their household as very or somewhat green (Sources: Ipsos, 2011 NASCAR Brand Tracker and Experian Consumer Research - Simmons National Consumer Survey, Fall Full Year 2010).

According to research 91% of NASCAR fans say they recycle items at least some of the time, compared to 87% for non-fans. Additionally, NASCAR fans are more likely than non-fans to say they plan to buy various mobile devices in the coming year (such as an iPhone, Blackberry, Android-powered phone or other mobile device), suggesting they will have millions of "old" electronic devices that can be recycled. (Sources: Ipsos, 2011 NASCAR Brand Tracker and Experian Consumer Research - Simmons National Consumer Survey, Fall Full Year 2010.)

Since its 2008 launch, NASCAR Green has focused on three key areas: waste, emissions and power. Aside from a host of new partners joining the effort with substantive programming, many track and team operators have launched their own programs in areas such as recycling, advancing land and energy conservation, and adopting alternative energy sources.

Qualifying Mission Accomplished: Bayne will defend Daytona 500
#21 Wood Brothers Racing Ford driven by Trevor Bayne
Photo - Wood Brothers Racing
For the past year Trevor Bayne and his No. 21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Fusion team have been referred to as the defending Daytona 500 champions. But to actually defend their title, they first had to earn a staring spot in this year's Great American Race.

Since Bayne and his Wood Brothers team run a partial schedule, they're not among the top 35 teams in car owner points, a group that is guaranteed a starting spot for upcoming races.

That meant Bayne had to either be one of the three fastest of those outside the top 35 in pole qualifying or race his way into the 500 in Thursday's Gatorade Duels, a risky proposition at best.

On Sunday, Bayne was best in class and ninth overall with a lap at 193.615 miles per hour, assuring himself and his team of being able to defend their 500 title.
"Mission accomplished," said team co-owner Eddie Woods after Bayne overcame windy conditions to be among a group of Ford drivers who led the way in qualifying.
