Irwindale Speedway appears to be closing track
Irwindale Speedway, considered by many to host the finest short track racing in the nation, appears to be history.

On Saturday, workers appeared to be closing down the facility, which has had the biggest NASCAR short track races on the West Coast for more than a decade.

Workers were dismantling the pit grandstand, which is adjacent to the first turn. They were also taking apart storage areas. The large billboard bordering the San Gabriel Valley River Freeway was not lit up for the first time in its history, barring power outages, and the track's web site was taken off the Internet.

More...This past week, the rumor began circulating through the short-track racing community in Southern CA that Irwindale Speedway, inarguably one of the best short tracks in the country, was closing.

Sunday, an executive closely associated with the half-mile paved oval track confirmed it: "Sadly," he said, "it's true."

Watkins Glen loses Sprint Cup sponsor
Watkins Glen International is without a title sponsor for its NASCAR Sprint Cup event after Heluva Good! ended contract negotiations earlier this week.

WGI President, Michael Printup said last week he was optimistic the food manufacturer known largely for its sour cream dips would come back for its fourth year as the race's primary sponsor, but he learned Tuesday that Heluva Good! decided not to renew its contract.
"We were a percent away from signing the deal and they turned around and walked away," Printup said Friday. "We loved Heluva Good! but of course every company takes changes of direction."
With its Sprint Cup event seven months away, the news has left Watkins Glen's marketing team and its corporate owner, International Speedway Corp. a small window to find another headliner.
"At this point, it's all hands on deck," said Printup, who expects to have a new sponsor in place within 90 days.
Heluva Good! also decided not to return as sponsor of the Sprint Cup race at Michigan International Speedway, which is another ISC-owned track.

Printup said Sprint Cup title sponsors generally provide tracks between $500,000 and $2,000,000.

The Glen Sprint Cup race has proved to be a popular event for fans and a good draw for sponsors, attracting nearly 90,000 spectators each year and 4.3 to 5.1 million television viewers.
"The biggest sponsor every race track has is its Cup entitlement sponsor," Printup said. "There's no question that it's painful."
Typically, some of the 36 yearly Sprint Cup events fail to attract a title sponsor, but that has not been the case for Watkins Glen. In its 26-year history, WGI has had seven sponsors.
"We have companies lined up. We always do, just in case something like this happens," Printup said.
ESPN will broadcast the Aug 12 race live at noon.

The NASCAR Foundation to establish Headquarters in Daytona Beach
The NASCAR Foundation "The Heart of NASCAR," is moving to the birthplace of the stock car sanctioning body.

NASCAR President Mike Helton announced today that NASCAR's charitable arm will relocate to Daytona Beach, FL, in the later part of the 2012 race season. The NASCAR Foundation's new location will be the International Motorsports Center, the corporate headquarters for NASCAR International Speedway Corporation and Grand-AM Road Racing.

The move will include the relocation of some of the foundation's current employees based in Charlotte, NC, as well as a nationwide search for a new executive director. Sandy Marshall, the foundation's current executive director, will remain with the organization until a new leader is secured. The foundation will continue to maintain a strong presence in Charlotte to serve teams, drivers and industry members in their charitable endeavors.
"This move will enable The NASCAR Foundation to be fully integrated with our corporate headquarters in Daytona Beach," said Betty Jane France, the foundation's chairwoman and founder. "In a relatively short period of time, The NASCAR Foundation has built a remarkable legacy of helping communities and children, but we've only just begun. We have a bright future and big plans. This move will help us reach our goals."

The NASCAR Foundation, organized in 2006, embodies the compassion of the NASCAR Family and its commitment to serving communities. The NASCAR Foundation seeks to raise funds and increase volunteerism to support nonprofit charities and charitable causes throughout the nation with an emphasis placed on initiatives that affect the ability of children to live, learn and play.

Since 2006, The NASCAR Foundation has donated more than $13 million to charitable organizations and helped provide medical treatment for more than 24,000 children annually at Speediatrics children's care units at Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach and Homestead (FL) Hospital. In addition, the foundation has fulfilled more than 600 "NASCAR Dreams," sent more than 1,100 kids to Victory Junction Gang Camp, recruited 12,000 fans to become part of a Volunteer Network and created educational opportunities for school-aged students that help to engage them in science and engineering programs.

Iowa Speedway ownership dispute
Last summer's ownership change at Iowa Speedway in Newton has sparked a still-escalating court battle between two Iowa families, with charges in each direction involving unpaid bills and contractual breaches.

Jasper County court papers allege that Manaco Corp. and Manatt's Inc., corporate arms of the family that built Newton's race track, stiffed the new buyers for more than $1.8 million in unpaid bills when the speedway changed hands last June.

The new owners, a corporation formed by members of the Clement family say they in turn have been accused of defaulting on the deal because they held back on scheduled payment to the Manatt family because of the unpaid bills. Documents say the Manatts' have threatened to file their own lawsuit against Conrad Clement, the founder of the Featherlite Corp., a since-sold Cresco company that makes trailers, and three of his relatives if the Manatts aren't paid in full withing ten days.

The latest version of the lawsuit, a 64-page document filed this week by Des Moines attorney, Scott Brennan, alleges that the Clements were stuck with nearly $1.85 million in unpaid bills after the speedway changed hands on June 30, 2011 - despite a provision in the purchase contract that required the Manatts to pay any outstanding debts.

The lawsuit does not involve Rusty Wallace, who continues to own roughly 8% of the speedway.

Robby Gordon and Speed Energy Scores Monster Win in Arizona
With the 2012 Off-Road racing season kicking off with a successful Dakar Rally for Robby Gordon and the SPEED Energy/Toyo Tires Team, Gordon didn't let up as he headed to Parker, AZ for the Best in the Desert Parker 425. It would be a new challenge for him as he drove a new truggy (a hybrid between a trophy truck and a Class 1 buggy). Built by the Geiser Brothers and owned by SPEED Energy/RPM Off-Road Racing teammate Clyde Stacey, it would be the first time Gordon would enter in the 1500 class instead of the BITD's Trick Truck Class. Gordon finished an impressive 14 minutes faster than last year's Jesse Jones. Gordon would beat the next competitor by nearly 5 minutes. A trouble-free day and open-road lead boosted Gordon to another victory for the 2012 Off-Road season. Robby Gordon's next challenge is set for February 10th in Johnson Valley, CA where he looks to tackle the world of rock crawling in the 2012 King of the Hammers race.

Carter-2-Motorsports Looking to Earn Respect on ARCA Tour in 2012
It goes without saying that racing can become a very expensive habit. For Carter-2-Motorsports (C2M) car owners Roger and Dana Carter, have shown within the past years how take a penny and turn it into a dollar - all towards streaming towards the finish line in the ARCA Racing series presented by Menards.

After a brief sabbatical from racing, Carter-2-Motorsports returned to the Automobile Racing Club of America (ARCA) last year running a limited schedule with car owner Roger Carter stepping up to the role as pilot of the No. 40 Dodge Charger. Amazingly through some diversity and setbacks, the team on a below-average budget was able to make three ARCA Racing series starts at Michigan, Iowa and Madison, WI respectively.

While Michigan, where the team just had one car, one motor and a slim volunteer crew and Iowa didn't exactly go as planned - C2M was enjoying the scenes of the ARCA Racing series circuit - knowing they had a place to call home.

A gratifying 16th place finish at Madison, a career-best for Carter in the series had the team building momentum back in North Carolina at the team's race shop where they poured long hours in hopes of raising their previous standards. For the season finale at Toledo Speedway, the team opted to bring two cars with Carter at the helm of his No. 40 and avid racecar driver Nick Tucker in a second entry, the No. 04 Dodge Charger. Despite limited sponsorship for the event, the team managed to post respectable lap times in practice which led to optimism for qualifying. Ultimately, a cost-saving method for the team but a technicality from series' officials regarding the use of tires bumped both drivers from the starting field after easily asserting themselves a berth into the 35-car field.

Ultimately unhappy with the eventual outcome at the Northern Ohio-race trac, the team used the experience to sail into the off-season to step-up their operation and prepare for a much larger presence in the ARCA Racing series presented by Menards which begins with the Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200 at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday, February 28, 2012.

To prepare for the 60th year of competition for ARCA, the team under the guidance and leadership of Tucker, participated in the open test at the 2.5-mile superspeedway in December with a variety of drivers. Based on the outcome of the three-day operation, C2M has casted it's lineup for Saturday afternoon's anticipated thriller.

Leading the team in the No. 40 Ron Paul for President/El Caribe Dodge Charger will be veteran driver Donnie Neuenberger. Despite over 60 starts in three of NASCAR's divisions, the Brandywine, MD native will look to make his inaugural ARCA Racing series start at the "World Center of Speed."

Carrying backing from Mariner Bank and Trauma Doc, veteran Late Model driver Larry Barford Jr. will lead the second entry for the Moorseville, NC-based team. The Denton, MD native will also make his first start on the high-banks of Daytona. The ARCA rookie who tested for the team in December will run a limited schedule for C2M in 2012.

The third and final entry for C2M in central Florida will be piloted by Charlotte, NC resident Michael Bockler. The word piloted is fitted for ARCA's newest face as the driver of the No. 67 Ambucs Dodge Charger retired from a successful career as a pilot to build a presence on the race track. Bockler also tackled DIS two months ago to better equip him towards making the starting grid for the 43-car field.

Alex Kennedy reunites with Spaker Racing for Daytona ARCA race
Spaker Racing reached back into their history books for a bit to find a driver for the ARCA race on Saturday, February 18 at Daytona International Speedway.

Alex Kennedy of Aztec, NM will wheel the No. 08 Ford for the team. The 20-year-old driver and team raced together in 2009 where they achieved a top-ten points finish in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East. He also ran one race in 2010 for the team.

Since then, Kennedy has gone on to make 11 NASCAR Nationwide series starts the past two seasons achieving one top-20 finish and six finishes better than 25th place.

And, as has been the case in most of his NNS starts, he will be carrying the Dream Factory on board for Daytona. Dream Factory is a non-profit volunteer organization granting dreams to children with critical or chronic illnesses between the ages of three and 18. Other marketing partnership opportunities are still available for the race.

This will be Kennedy's first time racing the 2.5 mile high banks of Daytona.

Tony Marks Racing and Leilani Munter Team Up
to Bring Dolphin awareness to the High Banks of Daytona
Leilani Munter may be small but she is a huge force when it comes to standing for causes that she is very passionate about, especially inhumane captivity and slaughter of dolphins around the world. Leilani will be driving the first ever ocean awareness themed car on the high banks of Daytona joining Tony Marks Racing in the ARCA Racing series presented by Menards on Feb 18, 2012. In an incredible display of the public's support for her cause, Leilani's race to bring public awareness to the plight of the dolphins has been funded completely by donations from individuals and organizations who wanted to help get her ocean awareness race car on the track.

The No. 12 TMR Dodge Charger will feature the Academy Award winning documentary "The Cove" which exposes the annual slaughter of thousands of dolphins in a small cove in Taiji, Japan. The documentary which won over 70 awards globally, also exposed the undeniable connection between dolphin parks and dolphin captivity with the largest slaughter of dolphins in the world. Munter, a biology graduate, has made three trips to Japan to document the dolphin slaughter first hand and keep the issue in the public's mind. Leilani comments,
"Racing a "The Cove" themed race car at Daytona is an incredible opportunity to reach a new audience about this important issue and since the race is broadcast live on SPEED, it will be seen in the United States and also overseas."

Super Model Maryeve Dufault joins NASCAR
Rising up from ARCA stock car racing to the NASCAR Nationwide series is a new reason why people may tangentially care about NASCAR. Her name is Maryeve Dufault and this is everything you need to know about his model-turned-badass.

Maryeve Dufault
Photo from her site
Racin' for a Livin'
The French Canadian got started racing since she was four-years-old, starting off in motorcross and breaking both her arms before she turned nine. So she has a history of being tough.

The first time you might have heard of her was back in 2000, when she won the Miss Hawaiian Tropic International beauty pageant. She spent the next few years working in Hollywood, being prized for her looks and her skills. The first job she landed here in the States was as a model on "The Price is Right," but she also worked as a Hollywood stunt driver.

As any race car driver will tell you, working your way up in racing is extraordinarily expensive. Without a rich family to fund her, Dufault had to rely on her modeling work to pay her way through to karts long before she won Miss Hawaiian Tropic. When asked about the money she made off her looks (Miss Hawaiian Tropic brought in six figures alone), she told The New York Post:
"I wasn't buying myself clothes. I was buying tires. I am a racer who uses modeling jobs to pay my bills."

416: The number of career starts for #01-Mike Wallace in the NASCAR Nationwide series. Mike's brother #09-Kenny Wallace got a lot of ink last year when he became the career leader in Nationwide starts, but many overlooked the fact that Mike is fourth on the all-time list; with his next start, Mike will tie Tommy Houston for third. With Kenny's 522, Mikes 416 and now-retired Rusty Wallaces 42 Nationwide starts, the racing Wallace brothers should hit 1,000 combined starts in the series sometime this season.

NASCAR Carl Edwards and Trevor Bayne Nominated for
Cartoon Network's Second Annual Hall of Game Awards

Carl Edwards and Trevor Bayne, known to most sports fans as winners in the NASCAR Sprint Cup series, could soon add "Dance Machine" and "Gnarliest Newb" to their respective resumes.

Edwards and Bayne have been nominated as part of Cartoon Network's second annual Hall of Game Awards, airing Monday, Feb 20 at 7pm ET. Five-time NASCAR Sprint Cup series champion and 2011 "Dance Machine" nominee Jimmie Johnson will also present "The World's Fastest Award" with a special cameo appearance.

The show, hosted by Shaquille O'Neal is a high-energy, off-the-wall, multi-platform experience that lets viewers vote and honor their favorite sports stars and sports moments of the year.

Edwards and Bayne have been nominated - and deservedly so - to compete in the "Dance Machine" and "Gnarliest Newb" categories. Edwards' signature victory celebration, a backflip from his car, catapulted him to be a finalist in the "Dance Machine" category. Bayne's improbable Daytona 500 victory as a 20-year-old in only his second NASCAR Sprint Cup series start last season propelled him to compete in what is essentially the "Rookie of the Year" category in this year's awards.

Fans can vote for Edwards and Bayne on hallofgame.com now through Friday, Feb 17. The site has already received over 64 million votes.

Edwards is gunning for his second straight Hall of Game award after taking home the "In It To Win It" title last year. Other NASCAR nominees from last year's inaugural show include: Danica Patrick, "She's Got Game" winner; Kurt and Kyle Busch, "Super Siblings" nominees; and Travis Pastrana, "Alti-tude" nominee.

This year's Hall of Game features musical performances by Flo Rida and Hot Chelle Rae, and appearances by New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski, Detroit Lions quarter back Matthew Stafford, pro and World Cup Soccer goalie Hope Solo and Los Angeles Angels right fielder Torii Hunter.

Be sure to tune in and watch Edwards, Johnson, Bayne and the rest of NASCAR's stars in the 54th running of the Daytona 500 on Sunday, Feb 26 on FOX at 1pm ET.

NASCAR Propels Giants to Super Bowl Victory
Last night in the Daytona 500 of Football, the New York Giants defeated the New England Patriots, employing a thrilling, breathtaking and awe-inspiring defensive package name after a thrilling, breathtaking and awe-inspiring sport - NASCAR.

The moniker, and it's genesis makes sense. Thinking about it...

De Justin Tuck went to college at Notre Dame, a quick three-hour drive from Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Look at him during a game, dancing here - then there - behind the line of scrimmage. Aren't his shimmies - which often result in a spike of some poor quarter back - reminiscent of Darrell Waltrip in Daytona International Speedway's Victory Lane after winning The Great American Race in 1989?

Then watch the swim move from DE Osi Umenyiora, whose college (Troy University) sits about a two-and-a-half hour drive from big Talladega Superspeedway. His go-to-move: Juking right, swatting a helpless defender away, and launching left. Can't you envision a similar slingshot maneuver on Lap 200 on February 26th?

And now everyone's down with JPP - DE Jason Pierre-Paul. He went to school at the University of South Florida, near NASCAR's bookend tracks - Daytona and Homestead-Miami Speedway. His specialty: Off the block speed, every single play. If the NFL had an American Ethanol Fastest on the Restart Award (they don't, but NASCAR does), he'd win it every game.

No wonder the Giants nicknamed its all-out pass rush after the worlds' most competitive form of motorsports.
"We came up with NASCAR; we call it our speed package," Giants defensive end Justin Tuck, who noticed two sacks last night, told ESPN. "Why do we call it that? All of us compete about who's the fastest and who gets to the quarterback the fastest. So NASCAR's just something that felt right."
So there's a competition about who's the fastest? And they bicker about who will be the first to an all-important prize? Do the similarities ever end? Maybe the NFL should just give in and end games with a checkered flag.

Among the NASCAR drivers who attended Super Bowl XLVI were Jeff Gordon, Kyle Busch, Clint Bowyer, Kasey Kahne, Austin and Ty Dillon.

Next on February 26, at 1pm on FOX, NASCAR's best will run the Daytona 500 for their chance at immortality.

The story-lines for the much anticipated opener are plenty. Will it be defending NASCAR Sprint Cup series champion Tony Stewart, who looks to fill the only hole in his brilliant career with his first win in The Great American Race? Or maybe Dale Earnhardt Jr. will nab his second 500 win to join his 2004 trophy.

Then there's the debut of Danica Patrick. Could she shock the world, winning the sport's biggest race in her first series start?

Either way, the Daytona 500 appetizer is over. The main course is now only three weeks away.

NASCAR Names MIS Doc 'Medical Director of the Year'
He is the person most race fans and guests likely don't want to see when they visit Michigan International Speedway. But if they do, they are in good hands.

NASCAR has named Dr. John Maino, Michigan International Speedway's medical director, as medical director of the year during its annual meeting with racetracks.

NASCAR annually recognizes a medical director who excels in leadership and organizational skills in the daily operations of a racetrack's infield care center. Maino always assures medical standards are met, and that issues are quickly addressed with an immediate and positive outcome.
"MIS is successful because we are a family; a team that works well together to provide a lasting, memorable experience at every racing event," Maino said. "The key to our success is teamwork, mutual respect and cooperation among the interacting disciplines when working together. I received the Medical Director Award from NASCAR for everyone I work with at MIS. The staffs of the fire, security and medical services should be receiving this award because without them we wouldn't be the success we are. We are the 'supporting staff' that ensures that the events will be as safe as possible."
Maino has not missed a race at Michigan International Speedway since he began working there in 1984. He oversees the infield care center's medical efforts.

On any given weekend, the infield care center could treat 500 to 1000 patients or more with everything from injuries they sustain at the track to existing issues that may have otherwise gone unnoticed.

The care center treats anyone at MIS on a race weekend - drivers, crew members, track staff and guests. It opens on Thursday of race week through Monday. He's treated drivers injured on the race track, dehydrated race fans, broken bones, sunburns, pink eye. You name it and he's probably treated it.
"The staff must anticipate dangers and problems while being flexible and adapting to the situation. When spectators and fans come to MIS they want to be secure knowing they will be safe and cared for should something occur," Maino said.

PBS to air "Racing Dreams" special
Award-winning filmmaker Marshall Curry (Oscar-nominated Street Flight, 2005; Sundance winner If a Tree Falls: A Story of Liberation Front, 2011), returns in 2012 with Racing Dreams, a chronicle of two boys and a girl who do something extraordinary: They fearlessly race extreme go-karts at speeds of up to 70 miles per hour in pursuit of trophies and, just maybe, careers as NASCAR drivers. And as the youngsters compete on the track, they also navigate the treacherous road from childhood to young adulthood.

Fondly described as "Talladega Nights meets Catcher in the Rye," Racing Dreams is a dramatic, funny and sometimes heartbreaking look at the world of NASCAR culture as lived by three young aspirants to race-car glory and their families. The film follows Annabeth Barnes (11-years-old), Josh Hobson (12) and Brandon Warren (13) as they compete in the Pavement series, a yearlong national championship of five races around the country organized by the World Karting Association (WKA).

CUP: Fuel Injection Scrambles Strategies
For months major NASCAR teams have been tinkering with this new thing called fuel injection, a system that has been a normal part of street cars for many years but one that will be new at the top level of stock car racing this year.

NASCAR finally is leaving the prehistoric carburetor behind, and one of the biggest challenges of the new season will be reaching a level of confidence with the new EFI system as quickly as possible.

The shift isn't expected to be dramatic, in part because teams and manufacturer engineers have been elbow-deep in the new systems for a long time. Still, there will be the little pesky things, some of which won't become apparent until drivers are in the heat of competition. And those little things can lose the Daytona 500.

Highland Rim Speedway sold after Hamilton declares bankruptcy
Tennessee's Highland Rim Speedway was sold at public auction Friday after promoter Bobby Hamilton, Jr. filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last month. Hamilton operated both Highland Rim and the historic Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway in 2011, but struggled to pay his bills. The former NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide series driver reportedly bounced a pair of checks to the Nashville Fairgrounds Board late last season, and was forced to cancel the track's traditional season finale, the All-American 400.

A foreclosure auction took place Friday at the county courthouse in Springfield, with Community Bank and Trust placing the only bid of $605,000. Equipment and other speedway assets will reportedly be sold separately at a later date.

Highland Rim Speedway is situated on two adjacent tracts of land totaling approximately 30 acres. The track was scheduled to open next month for its 50th anniversary season, but longtime track announcer Lanny Adams told the Tennessean newspaper that the future of the speedway is now in doubt.
